About Lublin

Lublin - the largest Polish city east of the Vistula River, located in the Lublin Upland, on the Bystrzyca river with a population of about 400 000 inhabitants.

The history of Lublin began in the Middle Ages, when the town was a trade settlement and a guard post on the eastern border of a young Polish state. The first written information about it dates back to the 12th century. In 1317 it was granted city rights.
In 1569 Lublin witnessed one of the most crucial events in Polish history - the signing of the pact between Poland and Lithuania. This is known as the Lublin Union.

Lublin's Old Town constitutes one of the most precious Polish complexes of historic buildings. Crakow Gate leading from the Old Town to the city center, the Castle and Crown Tribunal are commonly considered symbols of the city.

The Gate was built along with defensive walls during the reign of King Kazimierz The Great. Today, the Gate houses the Historical Museum. In the historical rooms of the Crakow Gate, the presented exhibition is devoted to the history of Lublin from the times of the oldest settlements (6th / 7th century) to 1944.
